My Favorite Time of Year: The Offseason. . .

Well that's a strange thing to say, right? Why would a golf coach enjoy the offseason? It's sure not because I'm going fishing. Although, I do love fishing. Well let me re-think that. Maybe I will go fishing. LOL. All humor aside, I really truly love the offseason because it's time to start putting together a new plan for the upcoming year.

DISCLAIMER: I'm assuming you are in a northern climate where you've played hard all Summer, and that is going to come to a close sometime in the next couple months. If you live in a southern climate, this article is also for you, whenever you come into your offseason.

THE OFFSEASON is time to sit down, dig in, and figure out what's going to take you to the next level of golf. If you have a coach or mentor, this is the time to get with them and put that plan together. I LOVE THAT. Let me offer a few key points, questions, and general outline for you to put together an amazing offseason plan!

Fall Golf Day - Some of my favorite golf is when the seasons change. I enjoy being able to play with a layer of clothing on. A wise man once said "there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear"
  • WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS? Both short and long-term. Then really put some thought in here and prioritize what is most important! !

  • WHAT ARE YOUR WEAKNESSES? It's time to have that honest look in the mirror. What's holding you back? What makes you the most uncomfortable? Try to look at yourself from a 5,000 foot view. It's hard to do but such and important part of the process

  • HOW MUCH EFFORT ARE YOU HONESTLY WILLING TO COMMIT? A plan is nothing without follow up. I would prefer you were conservative with your estimate. It's better to estimate low, and then put in more effort, in my opinion.

  • HOW WILL YOU BENCHMARK YOUR SUCCESS? How are you measuring your success? Examples: skill testing scores, dispersion circles, speed testing, mobility..

Alright now you're feeling all revved up and ready to hit the offseason with a purpose. What do you do next? Well here's the thing, I love motivation, but it is fleeting. Motivation will come and go day-to-day. What I need you to do is set yourself up for success.

How the heck does a person do that? In my opinion setting yourself up for success is about setting up systems, and processes that will lead you down the path of long-term improvement. Create discipline in your lifestyle. Create discipline in the name of your goals, and what's important to you. I'm going to leave you with a few best practices that will help set you up for success. Not just short-term, bang and bust type success. Long-term, sustainable success, the kind that will leave you with skills that stay with you.

  • Write it down somewhere you can see it everyday, these subtle reminders can make a HUGE difference i.e. calendar, mirror, car dash

  • Announce it publicly - I know scary right? I don't mean going I don't mean going on your local TV station and announcing it though. Just tell somebody somewhere, could be your spouse, friends, facebook page, instagram. This might be uncomfortable, well let me hit you with some truth, change is uncomfortable. This step could just propel you to change your habits, and crush them goals!

  • Put a reminder in your calendar, with an alarm. Set it up now while it's fresh on your brain. Schedule yourself time in the future to check in on your goals. Your future self needs a reminder how important these things are. This could be monthly, quarterly, or bi-weekly. When in doubt error with spacing your reminders closer than further away.

Well you guys, gals, golfers... This provides an outline for you to start crushing your goals this offseason. I hope you take it seriously, don't skip a step, and follow through with it. Your best season of golf starts now. At the close of next year I want YOU to be able to look in the mirror and say you put the effort in, you didn't skip a step, you followed through with your plan. If you can say that, I know you'll be a happier golfer, and chances are a much more successful golfer. We all define success differently, I don't want to tell you how to define your success. I just want to help give you tools, resources, and best practices to crush your goals!

At the end of the day, if you need a little extra help, or support. Feel free to reach out to me, and if I can help coach you I will! If I can't, I can definitely help point you in the right direction.

Cheers to the offseason, now it's time to get to work.
