Golf Grip?? Functional Wins

This is an article that has taken me many years of research and lessons given, to feel confident enough to deliver this message. For many years I always wondered why golf coaches and instructors were so focused on the grip. Yes the grip is important, yes it is your direct connection to the club face. But it seems that many instructors teach a "grip" versus a range of grips that allow a person to utilize their innate release patterns. In most cases before I work on the grip, I will teach a person to hit the ground in the correct spot (in front of the ball) and hit the middle of their club face.

Here's the deal. Many different grips have played GREAT golf through the years. Well with that information do you believe that there is a cookie cutter best grip for everybody? I don't. Players like Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus, Jordan Spieth, and Bryson Dechambeau all have played golf at the highest level with very different grips. Are there similarities? Yes. I want to focus more on what makes their grip functional versus trying to fit everybody into the same grip style.

Here are some similarities that I find to be extremely important.

  • The hands are connected together, no separation

  • The handle of the club is in the fingers, and more towards the finger tips

  • Somewhere between 1 and 3 knuckles would be visible on the lead hand when looking down from above

  • The bottom hand covers the top thumb

When you start to look at the similarities that's where the foundations of my opinion is formed. IT'S MORE IMPORTANT FOR YOUR GRIP TO BE FUNCTIONAL than anything else. Basically it needs to fall in that criteria above. After having a functional grip it's more important to UNDERSTAND how to use your wrists to make the face square for the longest possible time through the hitting area. That's a discussion for another day. In fact if you'd like to learn more about that, comment below.

Thanks for listening, and I'm attaching a video below to elaborate and provide visuals to this discussion. All the best.
